Book Review-Guillermo Huerta

Memnoch the Devil is more of a novel and story written by Anne Rice and it’s about Lestat’s discovery about true meaning of life and perhaps, love. Memnoch is one of Rice’s most intriguing and sympathetic characters to date, as well as the number one New York Times best seller. The book also offers passages of poetic brilliance and more that will encourage you to keep on reading it. This book starts with a brief description of Lestat, an old vampire who will be telling a story about him and a the different conflicts he will be facing throughout the book. Basically it starts with a conflict leading to another one and so on.
In the beginning of the book, Lestat tells to his beloved David that someone has been stalking him for the past months, but he has no idea who that person. The following quote shows that someone has been following him over the past months, “But the point is, I’m being followed again, and this time it’s no scheming mortal who knows the trick of astral projection and how to take possession of someone else’s body. I’m been stalked.” (Memnoch the Devil, pg.10). This shows that someone with different powers is coming for him and it might the beginning of a new rival for Lestat.
Lestat is a vampire that only sucks blood off bad persons such as criminal and drug dealers. He is also a decision-maker. A clear example is when he killed Roger, a drug dealer, but after hearing his story he regrets it because he never thought he’d be capable of doing such thing. The following quote shows how he did it, “Well hunger overcame judgment. I pressed my forehead against his neck first, shifting my hand to the back of his head, let him feel my hair, heard him draw in his breath, and then I drank.” (Memnoch the Devil, pg. 43). This shows that he was willing to do it no matter what the consequences were to be. He thought that this criminal should pay for his crimes.
The major conflict begins when he has to decide where to go, either help Memnoch the Devil defeat God because according to him God is destroying the world, or not to. Lestat decides to get advices from Dora instead of Armand and David who told him not to go with the devil because it might lead to a pact with him. The following quote shows the answer Lestat gave to Memnoch, “Memnoch the Devil”, I shouted. “I’m ready.” This quote demonstrates that after hearing Dora’s advice, Lestat is determined to help Memnoch the Devil defeat God.
In short, Lestat is a person who really made a critical decision by helping god and finding out what would have happened if he didn’t. It really took a lot of patience for me to read this book so I would suggest that if you are interested in this book you must be patient. The religious aspect was not that interesting to me, but in the end, I enjoyed the book. I definitely recommend this book because of the fact that it connects religion with evilness.
